Henry Fillmore and his discriminating trombones

Henry Fillmore (1881 to 1956) is the son of the publisher of the same name who has been active in America since the end of the 19th century. In 1915 the junior founded his own wind orchestra. Besides Sousa, Henry Fillmore is the most important American composer for wind orchestra. In addition to his marches, his compositions for trombone are still widely played today, the most famous being “Lassus Trombone”. Here is the list from his trombone family.

Now, however, these works have fallen into disrepute in the course of the debate on racism in America, and are even being boycotted by many wind orchestras. The reason for this lies in the 1920s. At that time there were numerous shows in America in which white musicians were painted black and the blacks were portrayed somewhat clumsily. On the covers of the aforementioned Fillmore editions were drawings of black trombonists in caricatures. That does not go down well at all in these times in America.
