Jeder von uns war schon wenigstens einmal von diesen unverkennbaren Rhythmen, dieser Lebensfreude und diesem Esprit mitgerissen. The Latin Smile ist ein Versuch, den Nerv dieser Musik zu treffen und ihren Geist in Noten festzuhalten. Das Stück besteht aus zwei Themen, die mal unisono, mal mehrstimmig vorgetragen werden und zwei Interludien, die diese umrahmen. Rhythmische Sicherheit jeder Stimme ist hier eine besondere Voraussetzung. Alles wird nur schnell und möglichst hot (heiß) gespiel. Man stelle sich dabei am besten folgendes vor: Die ganze Stadt ist auf der Straße, alles singt und tanzt, überall spielt Musik und die Nacht ist unendlich lang.... Fire! Fever! Flame! Temperament! - these are the terms most often used to describe Latin American music. Each of us has at least once been electrified by these unmistakable rhythms, this joy of life and this 'esprit”. The Latin Smile hopes to capture the essence of this kind of music and to put its spirit down in notes. The piece consists of two themes to be played once in unison, then in several voices, and of two interludes providing the musical transition between themes. Rhythmical accuracy is essential for a convincing performance. The piece should be played as fast and hot as possible.
