Das einsätzige Werk beginnt mit einem Ostinato, das sich in ein grosses Crescendo entwickelt und dem das Soloinstrument mit Wucht in einer Kadenz antwortet. Diese legt sich nieder und wird von einem dissonanten Motif von 4 aufsteigenden, im ganzen Werk wiederauftretenden Noten abgelöst. Der Mittelteil des Werks ist ein Andante in Romanzenform, gefolgt von einem Allegro marcato, leicht und virtuos, Einführung zu einer 2. Kadenz für den Solisten. Die folgende Passage, ruhig und ausdrucksvoll, braucht das Thema der Romanze in einem Fugato. Nach einer Wiederholung des Allegros, in dramatischem Klima, entklingt das Werk ruhig, traurig, mit den harmonischen Tönen der Bratsche, dessen letzter, ohne Begleitung ins Unhörbare übergeht. Poème, in der Orchesterfassung, wurde 1994 geschrieben und im selben Jahr am 16.Dezember in der 'Iglesia de los Venerables' in Sevilla, Spanien, uraufgeführt. Michael Murray- Robertson wurde begleitet von den London Chamber Players unter Adrian Sunshine. The one-movement work begins with an ostinato which builds with a large crescendo. The instrumental soloist responds violently with a cadenza which grows calmer to set up the appearance of a dissonant motif of ascending quarter notes which occurs throughout the rest of the composition. An andante makes up the middle section of the work in the form of a romanza. This episode is followed by a light and virtuoso Allegro marcato which introduces a second cadenza by the soloist. The following passage, calm and expressive, makes contrapuntal use of the theme of the romanza. After a quote from the Allegro ends dramatically, the work concludes calmly, but not without sadness. It dies away with harmonics in the viola. The final note, played without accompaniment, fades into nothingness. Written in 1994, the Poème, in its orchestra version, had its world premiere at the Hospital Church of the Ancient Abbey in Seville, Spain, on December 16 of that year. Michael Murray-Robertson was accompanied by The London Chamber Players under the direction of Adrian Sunshine. L'oeuvre, d'un seul tenant, débute par un ostinato qui s'épanouit en un grand crescendo auquel répond avec violence l'instrument soliste dans une cadence qui s'apaise pour faire place à un motif dissonant de quatre notes ascendantes qui se retrouveront tout au long de la composition. Un andante constitue la partie médiane de l'oeuvre sous forme de romance. Cet épisode est suivi d'un allegro marcato léger et virtuose qui introduit une seconde cadence en faveur du soliste. Le passage suivant, expressif et calme, utilise en fugato la thématique de la romance. Après un rappel de l'allegro s'achevant dans un climat dramatique, l'oeuvre se termine dans le calme, mais non sans tristesse et s'éteint avec les notes harmoniques de l'alto dont la dernière, sans accompagnement, se perd dans l'inaudible. Ecrit en 1994, le Poème, dans sa version orchestrale, a vu sa création mondiale en l'Eglise de l'Hôpital des Vénérables Abbés à Séville (Espagne), le 16 décembre de la même année.
