This string quartet was written at the request of the Sebastian String Quartet. These musical postcards express the composer's deep and intimate feelings for the beautiful places on Earth. Boston Blues This movement was inspired by the daily traffic noise in the city of Boston, Mass. Performances of this movement should include the playing of the recording of the city's street sounds by Colin Benn prior to and at the end of the movement. Interstellar Greeting card: This movement presents the beauty of the planet Earth in a peaceful manner, with vibrato and non-vibrato chords heard in a somewhat mystic alternation of high and low registers. Special staging instructions : The lights should be gradually turned off in coordination with the appearance of the optional didgeridoo. The length of the improvised section is at the discretion of the performers. At the entrance of the first violin on the final chord, the lights shoule be gradually turned back on, and the didgeridoo stops playing.
