Der Stil des Werkes inspiriert sich vom Jazz und der Volksmusik, was damals eine grosse Neuheit im Repertoire für Tuba/Euphonium bedeutete. Prolog und Epilog sind im Jazzballade Stil geschrieben. Die 3 Hauptsätze wechseln von LatinJazz und Slow Blues zu schnellem Jazz-Walzer. Bei der generellen Konzeption des Werkes ging es darum, das Quartett als Rhythmik-Sektion aber auch als Melodieführer ein­zusetzen. Jeder Hauptsatz enthält ein improvisiertes Solo. 'Diversions' was composed in 1978 especially for the New York Tuba Quartet. John Stevens was a member of the group at that time. The work features styles of jazz and popular music that were not generally found in the tuba/euphonium repertoire at the time this piece was composed. The Prologue and Epilogue are in a 'jazz ballad' style. The three main movements feature latin jazz, slow blues and uptempo jazz waltz styles. The concept behind the work is to employ the quartet as both the rhythm section and the melodic voices. Each of the main movements features an improvised jazz solo. 'Diversions' a été composé en 1978 à l'intention du New York Tuba Quartet dont John Stevens était alors membre. Cette pièce s'inscrit dans un style jazz/musique populaire représentant à cette époque une grande nouveauté pour le répertoire des ensembles de tubas/euphonium. Le Prologue et l'Epilogue sont conçus dans un style de ballade de jazz. Les trois mouvements principaux enchaînent du jazz latino, un blues lent et une valse de jazz dans un tempo enlevé. Le concept général consiste à exploiter le quatuor soit comme section rythmique, soit comme voix mélodiques. Chacun des principaux mouvements comprend un solo improvisé. Gewicht: 0.259
